Greece is increasingly attracting affluent older American cruise travelers, according to a new report by travel insurance provider SquareMouth. The study highlights the country’s growing appeal among high-spending, long-haul visitors who are driving demand for premium Mediterranean itineraries.
SquareMouth’s 2026 senior cruise travel analysis ranks Greece 7th globally among the world’s top cruise destinations for travelers aged 65 and older, accounting for 4.9% of all insurance policy sales within this demographic. Greece shares the global spotlight alongside major cruise powerhouses such as Mexico, the United States, the Bahamas, Italy, and Spain.
American seniors drive premium, extended itineraries
The findings reveal that older travelers are significantly more inclined to choose longer, higher-value voyages compared to younger generations. Key insights from the data include:
- Longer Durations: Travelers aged 65 and older are much more likely to select itineraries lasting more than two weeks.
- Higher Average Spend: Seniors spend an average of nearly $7,000 per cruise.
- Premium Budgets: Older travelers are nearly twice as likely as younger passengers to spend upwards of $10,000 on a single cruise holiday (7.7% compared to 4.2%). Conversely, nearly half of younger respondents plan to keep budgets below $3,000, compared to just 35% of seniors.
The report also underscores the immense loyalty of the senior demographic, revealing that 95% of seniors booking a cruise in 2026 are repeat travelers.
Furthermore, their insurance purchasing habits have shifted. Older travelers are now placing a higher priority on emergency medical coverage than standard trip cancellation protection, reflecting a heightened awareness of health-related risks while traveling abroad.
As Greece continues to strengthen its infrastructure and footprint in the Mediterranean cruise sector, these findings solidify its position as a premier destination for lucrative, experience-driven international tourism.
