Storm Agneta has caused flooding and damage across parts of Greece, prompting emergency operations and a 112 alert on Rhodes. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) warns that heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue in several regions through Tuesday, November 3.
The worst conditions on Rhodes have affected Archangelos, where rising water levels and an overflowing river flooded roads and damaged property. Firefighters have also responded to incidents on Samos, in Volos and elsewhere in the Dodecanese.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors in affected areas to follow official instructions and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather.
Emergency alert issued for Rhodes
Authorities sent a message through Greece’s 112 emergency alert system to residents and visitors on Rhodes at around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, November 2. The alert urged people to limit their movements because of the danger posed by heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the Archangelos area.
Floodwater swept through roads in Archangelos, damaging vehicles, shops and other properties. Flooding was also reported in Afantou and parts of southern Rhodes. Schools in the municipal districts of Archangelos and Afantou were closed on Monday as a precaution. Emergency crews worked to pump water, clear drainage channels and remove debris.
Flooding affects Samos, Volos and Kalymnos
The Fire Service received 28 calls for assistance on Samos and carried out 10 water-pumping operations, according to figures reported on Monday.
In the Volos area, firefighters received 12 calls. They carried out seven water-pumping operations and two tree-cutting operations as heavy rainfall flooded streets and homes.
Across the Dodecanese, the Fire Service received 18 calls. On Rhodes, crews carried out three water-pumping operations, cut down one tree and moved two people to safety. On Kalymnos, firefighters carried out one water-pumping operation and cut down a tree.
Kalymnos also experienced a dangerous incident when a large boulder broke loose on a hillside and struck a garage in the Agios Vasileios area. The island’s mayor told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that a car was inside the garage when the boulder hit it. The incident caused property damage.
Where heavy rain is expected next
Greek Meteorological Service EMY warns of further heavy rain and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday. Localized hail is also possible.
On Monday, November 2, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Ionian Islands from around midday. Epirus, western Central Greece, and western and southern parts of the Peloponnese may experience intense conditions from the afternoon, particularly in coastal and marine areas. The Dodecanese are expected to face intermittent storms until late at night.
On Tuesday, November 3, heavy rain is forecast in the Ionian Islands until midday and in Epirus, western Central Greece, and western and southern parts of the Peloponnese until the afternoon.
