Mimis Domazos, the Greek soccer legend and a Panathinaikos icon is hospitalized in critical condition after suffering a cardiac arrest on Wednesday, January 22, a statement released by the hospital says.

Domazos, who turned 83 on Wednesday, is intubated at the “Red Cross” hospital in central Athens.

According to the statement, “Mr. Mimis Domazos, the well-known former football player, was transported by ambulance to the Cardiology Emergency Department of the General Hospital of Athens ‘Korgialenio-Benakeio’ of the Hellenic Red Cross, without a pulse or cardiac electrical activity, following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.”

The hospital said that medical staff performed advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation “and the patient responded.” Domazos is currently undergoing a complete clinical and laboratory evaluation.

In late morning, Domazos was reportedly outside a diagnostic center in Halandri, a northern Athens suburb, when he suddenly felt ill and collapsed. He received initial first aid at the diagnostic center, before an ambulance was called. The ambulance crew performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and transferred him to the “Red Cross” hospital.

According to other reports, Domazos had been recently diagnosed with the flu and coronavirus and had gone to the diagnostic center to do some medical checks. There, before collapsing outside the building, he was told he had a pulmonary edema and needed to go to the hospital.

Mimis Domazos, a celebrated figure in Greek soccer history

The former legendary footballer whose knickname was “The General,” during his career was famed for his dribbling ability, his creative playstyle, especially his through balls of pinpoint accuracy and his leadership skills.

He played as an attacking midfielder and was the Panathinaikos captain for 15 years. He was also the National team captain for several years. He ended his glorious career in the summer of 1980 with a record of 539 appearances and 139 goals.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics chose him in the best XI of all time of Greek football in 2021. Domazos also famously led Panathinaikos to the final of the European Champions Cup in 1971 in Wembley, an achievement that to this day remains unmatched by any other Greek team and is known as the “Wembley Epic.”

Domazos made his debut with Greece on 2 December 1959 against Denmark in a 3–1 defeat at Leoforos. His last match was on 11 November 1980, at the same stadium in a friendly match against Australia, in a 3–3 draw, in which he was honored for his many years of contribution to the national team and the Greek football in general.

In this specific match he scored his last goal, which makes him the oldest player to ever score for Greece, since in less than three months he would have turned 39.
