Bomb threats disrupted at least 25 passenger flights across Europe on Thursday, including services connected to Greece, prompting emergency diversions, military escorts and extensive security checks. Several aircraft were redirected to alternate airports, while others underwent inspections after landing. Authorities found no explosives aboard the aircraft searched.

Greek carrier Aegean Airlines confirmed threats involving two services, Flight A3552 from Thessaloniki to Milan and Flight A3860 from Athens to Vienna. Both aircraft underwent security checks, and the airline confirmed the warnings were unfounded. A Sky Express flight from Athens to Prague was also among four aircraft inspected by Czech police. All four landed safely.

The disruption spread across France, Bulgaria, Italy, Poland, Spain, Romania and several other European countries. The latest incidents followed similar warnings earlier in the week, raising concerns among aviation authorities about the repeated targeting of commercial aircraft.

Bomb threats target flights across Greece and Europe’s other aviation routes

In France, an Aer Lingus flight traveling from Dublin to Rome was diverted to the Évreux military air base after French fighter jets intercepted the aircraft. The Airbus A320 was carrying 151 passengers and six crew members. Everyone landed safely, and security personnel found no explosives. French prosecutors also investigated the pilots’ response to instructions during the diversion.

Bulgarian military aircraft escorted three Ryanair flights arriving from Madrid, Copenhagen and London. The London service was diverted to Plovdiv, while the other two reached Sofia. All three underwent security inspections that found no dangerous devices.

A Wizz Air flight from Milan to Warsaw was diverted to Vienna, while a Finnair service traveling to Rome received a military escort. Czech authorities inspected four flights arriving in Prague, and Romanian security officials examined aircraft landing in Bucharest.

Spanish authorities also investigated warnings affecting Iberia and Air Europa services. The alerts caused delays, evacuations and baggage searches across several airports.

Anonymous threats trigger European aviation security investigation

Some threatening emails claimed to come from “fighters of the Male State,” a Russian far-right extremist movement. However, authorities had not confirmed the senders’ identities or established whether the incidents were coordinated.

European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas said an aviation security information-sharing mechanism had been activated to support cooperation among affected countries.

The latest disruptions followed at least seven flight alerts on Tuesday and another on Monday. Greek authorities also investigated a separate bomb warning involving a cruise ship near Syros on Tuesday, but searches found no explosive device.

Airlines and security agencies continued coordinating their responses as investigators worked to identify those responsible for the repeated threats.
