A major emergency unfolded at Zea Marina in Piraeus when an alarm was raised in the early hours of Thursday due to a fire involving moored vessels.

Twenty firefighters using eight vehicles, supported by Coast Guard and Fire Department boats, rushed to the scene to battle the blaze from both land and sea.

The fire, which reportedly started on one boat for unknown reasons, rapidly spread to adjacent yachts. Initial reports confirm that three vessels have sunk, and a fourth has taken a severe list. Anti-pollution booms were quickly deployed to contain any marine contamination.

Zea Marina, the site of the incident, is one of the Mediterranean’s finest superyacht destinations. Historically, the bay served as a crucial naval base for ancient Athens’ trireme fleet.

Today, following a major renovation for the 2004 Olympic Games, the marina offers 670 berths for boats up to 150 meters long. Its location in the heart of Piraeus makes it a favourite among crews, offering immediate access to shops, restaurants, and the nearby Naval Museum of Greece.

Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the destructive fire.
