A fatal incident unfolded early on Monday on Samos, Greece, where a 12-year-old boy lost his life during the landing of a migrant vessel.
Authorities found the child on Svala Beach in the Vourliotes area with severe injuries caused by the boat’s propeller. Emergency responders were visibly shaken as they secured the scene and assisted the survivors who had reached the shore.
Smuggler’s escape attempt turns deadly in Samos migrant incident
According to preliminary reports, the vessel’s operator, believed to be a Turkish smuggle, forced 37 migrants and the boy into the water before attempting to flee. As the smuggler maneuvered the boat to evade approaching Hellenic Coast Guard patrols, the vessel’s spinning propeller fatally struck the child.
Authorities say the suspect abandoned the craft on a nearby beach and escaped on foot, prompting an extensive search by both the Hellenic Coast Guard and the Hellenic Police.
Authorities continue investigation into migrant landing incident on Greece’s Samos
The boy’s remains were transported to Samos General Hospital for forensic examination. Meanwhile, the 37 migrants are being moved to the island’s Reception and Identification Center for processing and support.
Investigators are collecting statements from survivors as efforts to locate the fleeing smuggler continue across the region.
Similar incidents in recent years
This tragedy adds to a troubling series of migrant-related disasters in Greece and across the Mediterranean. Earlier this month, a vessel drifting south of the island of Chrysi near Crete was found half-submerged, with eighteen migrants dead and two survivors in critical condition. Authorities believe the victims succumbed to hypothermia after being trapped on an overcrowded dinghy.
Another widely reported incident occurred in June 2023 off the coast of Pylos, Greece, where an overloaded migrant boat capsized, resulting in a significant loss of life. Many passengers were never recovered, and the event sparked international criticism over the effectiveness of rescue operations.
These incidents, alongside the latest tragedy on Samos, highlight both the extreme risks faced by migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings and the reckless tactics employed by smugglers seeking to avoid detection.
