Greece will start fining citizens aged 60 and over who are unvaccinated against Covid-19 on Monday. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has introduced the new mandate to try to sway the unvaccinated population and alleviate the burden on the nation’s healthcare system.
Mitsotakis said on Saturday that “the few of our fellow citizens over 60 who are still unvaccinated, I encourage them today: Take the step. It’s not a matter of the fine. Yes, the fine will be imposed, but that’s the least. Protect your life, the lives of those you love and understand that the vaccine is safe.”
Greek health officials have maintained that the most vulnerable people are those who are unvaccinated. Authorities had previously announced their plan to introduce the mandate in November when roughly half a million seniors were unvaccinated. In the time since the mandate’s announcement and its implementation, 220,000 of those seniors have gotten vaccinated.
Those who refuse the vaccine will be fined 100 euros ($154) monthly. The fine will be collected by the Greek tax authorities and the funds will be redirected to hospitals treating Covid-19 patients.
