Ukraine ‘Can Use US Arms to Strike Russia’; Moscow Warns of War With NATO

US-made weapons can be used over part of Ukraine’s border with Russia to counter Moscow’s offensive aimed at the city of Kharkiv, Joe Biden has decided, relaxing an important constraint on Ukraine’s ability to defend itself.

“The president recently directed his team to ensure that Ukraine can use US-supplied weapons for counter-fire purposes in the Kharkiv region so Ukraine can hit back against Russian forces that are attacking them or preparing to attack them,” a US official said.

Russian forces have made gains in the Kharkiv region in recent weeks after a surprise offensive in the area, close to the border with Russia.

The change will also allow the Ukrainian army to target Russian forces massing across the border in the Belgorod region but restrictions remain on the use of US long-range missiles to strike inside Russia.

Would using US weapons in the Russia-Ukraine war escalate conflict?

Despite concerns that such a development could further escalate the conflict, several European leaders also recently called for restrictions on the use of such weapons to be relaxed.

But Washington, which provides the bulk of Ukraine’s weaponry, had resisted easing these restrictions over fears of escalation.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hinted at the shift during a visit to Moldova on Wednesday.

“At every step along the way, we’ve adapted and adjusted as necessary,” he said. “And so that’s exactly what we’ll do going forward.”

Russian forces appear to have recently taken advantage of a window of opportunity to push deeper into Ukrainian territory in Kharkiv as Kyiv waits for further Western weapons to arrive at the front.

Moscow warns that US weapons striking Russia is war with NATO

A top Russian official says Ukraine striking with US weapons inside of Russia could mean war with NATO – and warns Moscow’s nuclear threats are not a bluff.

Responding to Joe Biden partially lifting restrictions on how Ukraine can use military supplies yesterday, Dmitry Medvedev is now issuing a series of warnings to the West.

The official says “no one can rule out” when tensions with the West will escalate to its “last stage,” and that Moscow will consider any long-range weapons used by Ukraine to strike inside Russia as being controlled by NATO.

As a result, Medvedev says it “could become a reason to go to war” with the Western military bloc. He also says Russia is “not bluffing” about its threats it could use tactical nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, a Putin-backed thinktank also suggested yesterday that Russia should consider a “demonstrative” nuclear blast to scare Ukraine from using Western weapons inside its territory.
