Reports in Turkish media suggest that Turkey is preparing a significant military buildup in Occupied Northern Cyprus, with its forces expected to more than double in the near future.
According to TRT Haber, the Turkish military presence on the island is being substantially reinforced, as Cyprus assumes a heightened strategic role for Ankara amid growing instability in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean.
Upgraded Command Structure
One of the key developments highlighted is the elevation of the command structure overseeing Turkish forces in the occupied territory.
The Supreme Military Council reportedly upgraded the post to the rank of Lieutenant General, underlining Ankara’s intent to institutionalize a stronger and more permanent military presence.
Troop Numbers May Surpass 100,000
Turkish sources indicate that troop numbers in Occupied Northern Cyprus could surpass 100,000, reflecting a decisive shift in Turkey’s security doctrine. Previously, the Turkish contingent consisted of a limited number of tanks, artillery, air defense, and engineering units.
Now, the force is reportedly evolving into a comprehensive regional deterrent, incorporating land, naval, and air components, alongside electronic warfare and support units.
