Greece is offering a profound encounter with history as the Acropolis has opened its gates exclusively to ultra-small groups of one to five people, granting private access during hours when the archaeological site is closed to the general public.
This pioneering initiative is called “The Acropolis Experience.” Developed by the Ministry of Culture and the Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources Development (ODAP), this innovative premium tour program has quickly become one of the most talked-about projects in Greek tourism.
According to ODAP Director Angeliki Maragaki, speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA):
“2024 was our foundational year. It was a strict pilot phase during which we consciously chose to conduct just eight targeted, customized tours to meticulously test and optimize the experience on the ground. Simultaneously, ODAP strategically invested in global outreach, launching the international campaign ‘The A[CROP]olis Experience’, which earned significant acclaim and was featured in the prestigious Lürzer’s Archive magazine.”
Booking surge reshapes the 2026 season
This strategic investment paid off. In 2025, bookings skyrocketed to 72 customized visits. The upward trend is hitting new peaks this year, in 2026—by the start of the summer season alone, confirmed bookings have already reached 80.
With the price set at €5,000 per tour ($5,680), the program generates substantial revenue, projected to surpass €400,000 ($454,000). Crucially, 100% of these funds are directly reinvested into the protection, conservation, and promotion of Greece’s cultural heritage.
Visitor demographics reveal a shifting trend in how high-net-worth travelers engage with culture. Even though ODAP has received a flood of requests for larger groups, the organization strictly limits the experience to a maximum of five people.
“We choose to maintain this restriction as a core philosophy,” Maragaki explains. “It is the only way to safeguard the premium quality and the profound sense of exclusivity that defines the program.”
Interestingly, the data shows an increasing demand for total isolation. Couples and solo travelers frequently pay the full €5,000 fee just to guarantee absolute privacy during their encounter with the monument. It proves that today’s discerning traveler is no longer looking for a passive sightseeing tour, but an authentic, emotional connection to history.
Custom itineraries and strict safeguards
On the ground, visitors follow a meticulously designed route accompanied by an expert guide who weaves historical narrative with an immersive, sensory experience. Guests can personalize their booking by selecting their preferred time, language, duration, and pacing.
The program offers bespoke care tailored to each guest’s needs, always within strict guardrails to ensure the safety and integrity of the archaeological site. The designated routes were developed in close cooperation with the Ephorate of Antiquities of the City of Athens. Visitors can tour with:
- An official program guide
- A private licensed guide of their choice
- An independent, self-guided walk along the pre-approved, secure perimeter using premium material provided by ODAP.
Expanding to Plaka, Sounio, and beyond
The success of the Acropolis is just the beginning. In 2026, the program expanded to include an evening tour of Plaka, specifically the Museum of Modern Greek Culture. This magical, preserved neighborhood features 19th-century courtyard homes and neoclassical architecture intermingled with ancient ruins.
The VIP experience concludes at the site’s traditional café, where guests unwind with an exclusive Greek wine and cheese pairing, offering a sensory initiation into Greek gastronomy and hospitality.
Driven by this success, the program is scaling up. Soon, via the digital platform hh.gr, new luxury cultural experiences will become available:
- Sunrise at Cape Sounion (Temple of Poseidon)
- Sunset at the Temple of Aphaia in Aegina
- An evocative night tour at the iconic Palace of the Grand Master in Rhodes
This expansion highlights a modern, self-sustaining model for monument preservation. While tools like the EU Recovery Fund and NSRF help build foundational infrastructure, Greece is focusing on long-term sustainability.
“When a visit successfully evokes genuine emotions, that is when a true experience is born,” Maragaki concludes. “That experience becomes a powerful memory that follows the visitor home—a new story they share with the world, and ultimately, a permanent bridge that brings them back to Greece time and again.”
