On the Greek island of Chios, the tenth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, nestled in the sparkling waters of the Aegean Sea, there’s a bar experience unlike any other. Set right on the breakwater of the island’s main port, this coastal hangout offers more than just drinks with a view—it brings you face-to-face with massive ferries as they glide by, just meters from your seat.
A nightly ritual between sea and shore at the Chios bar
“Every evening, the ferry to and from Çeşme, Turkey, glides right by,” says Dimitris Tsirozidis, the bar owner. “Everyone immediately pulls out their phones and starts taking photos of it. It’s something truly special.”
What makes it even more unique is the deep connection with the ships themselves. Many of the ferry captains are locals from Chios and often greet the bar by sounding the horn. In response, the bar flashes its lights, and guests enthusiastically wave to the passengers on board. It has become a beloved tradition—one that transforms a simple drink into a shared moment between sea and shore.
More than just a view
While the bar is a highlight, Chios, Greece’s fifth largest island, also has much more to offer. With over ninety stunning beaches, it’s a dream destination for sunseekers and nature lovers alike. The island is also famous for its mastiha, a natural resin found only on Chios and highly prized for its health benefits and unique flavor.
Venture further inland, and you’ll find beautifully preserved medieval villages such as those of Pyrgi and Mesta, known for their distinct architecture and deep-rooted history. Combined with its warm hospitality and authentic local charm, Chios is an island that leaves a lasting impression.
But for many visitors, that one moment—when a giant ship silently passes by as the sun sets—is what makes this place truly unforgettable.
