Strong Winds Cause Ferry Cancellations and High Fire Risk in Greece

Greece ferry cancellations

Strong winds are causing ferry cancellations and a high risk of fires today, Friday, in several regions across Greece.

Ferry departures from the ports of Piraeus, Lavrio, and Rafina to the Aegean islands, particularly the Cyclades, are canceled until at least 12:00 p.m. due to gale-force winds reaching up to 9 Beaufort.

  • Piraeus: All routes are suspended.
  • Lavrio: There are no routes to Kythnos or on the Agia Marina-Nea Stira line.
  • Rafina: All departures to the Cyclades are canceled, though ferries to Marmari are running normally.

Ferry routes for the Argosaronic Gulf are operating as scheduled. The Coast Guard advises travelers to contact their shipping companies for updated departure times and to avoid causing traffic congestion at the ports.

High fire risk in Greece

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued a “red alert” (risk category 5) for a number of areas due to conditions that are extremely favorable for the outbreak and spread of fires. The alert is in effect for:

  • Attica (including Kythira)
  • Central Greece (Boeotia and Evia)
  • Peloponnese (Argolis, Corinthia, and Laconia)

A “very high” fire risk (category 4) is also in effect for eleven other regions, including parts of Western Greece, the Peloponnese, the Cyclades, Crete, and the Ionian Islands.

Citizens are urged to be extremely vigilant and avoid any activity that could start a fire, such as burning dry grass, using equipment that causes sparks, or throwing lit cigarettes. If you see a fire, call the Fire Department immediately at 199.
