Richard Hsiao: The Young Billionaire Who Aims to Redraw Greek Basketball

Richard Hsiao, the young majority shareholder of Aris Betsson Basketball Club, created a sensation with his recent appearance in Thessaloniki, marking his first game at the legendary “Nick Gallis Hall.” Hsiao’s presence coincided with Aris’s dominant 98-76 EuroCup victory over Hamburg, a game also attended by Greek basketball icon Nick Galis.

Hsiao, the Founder and CEO of RHC Group, was visibly immersed in the passionate Greek basketball culture. He was reportedly “blown away” by the atmosphere, particularly the massive pre-game confetti shower from the fans. His enthusiasm was evident as he interacted with supporters, took the microphone to address the crowd, and even tried a customary mid-court shot, common in American basketball.

This high-profile debut underscores the strategic ambition behind his investment. Hsiao’s purchase of the historic Greek club is widely viewed as a stepping stone toward his ultimate goal: involvement with an NBA franchise.

Profile of the new owner

Richard Hsiao is the 24-year-old, American-born son of a currently imprisoned Chinese billionaire. While the RHC Group is reported to be financed by his mother’s private wealth, his ventures operate with the financial weight of a family office.

His New York-based RHC Group is a sports and entertainment investment and philanthropic platform. He also founded J17 Capital Inc., a venture capital firm with investments in tech and finance.

Hsiao is vocal about his belief in the power of sports, using his RHC Initiatives charitable arm to empower youth, particularly girls and low-income communities.

The Antetokounmpo Factor

Hsiao’s move into Greek basketball is closely linked to his relationship with NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two developed a close friendship in Milwaukee, where Hsiao is a regular courtside figure. This friendship provided him with access to high-level professional sports management, culminating in his presence during the Milwaukee Bucks’ 2021 NBA Championship celebrations.

As Hsiao continues to gain experience managing a professional sports organization like Aris, his presence signals a new era of global, well-funded influence entering Greek basketball.

Aris B.C. is one of Greece’s most historic and successful basketball clubs, known as the “Emperor” of Greek basketball.

The undisputed peak of their glory was the “Golden Era” of the 1980s and early 1990s. During this period, Aris dominated Greek basketball, winning seven consecutive Greek League Championships (1985–1991) and four straight Domestic Doubles.
