The world of pizza is full of creative and delicious possibilities, but some toppings might raise an eyebrow or two. If you’re adventurous, you might want to give some of them a try.

Recently a Hong Kong pizza eatery introduced snake-meat pizza. This pizza offers a contemporary twist on the traditional snake soup, a popular dish in Hong Kong, Southern China, Vietnam, and Thailand.

The innovative recipe features shredded snake meat, black mushrooms, and Chinese dried hams—essential components of Hong Kong’s authentic snake stew.

The pizza franchise, as confirmed by its general manager, incorporates meat from various snake species, such as Chinese rat snakes, banded kraits, and white banded snakes.

According to a statement from the pizza restaurant, “Combined with cheese and diced chicken, the snake meat takes on a richer flavor profile.”

Squid ink is a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine, and it’s also used to make a unique black pizza sauce. The ink adds a subtle seafood flavor and a dramatic black color to the pizza.

Saba is a type of mackerel that is pickled in soy sauce and vinegar. It’s a popular topping in Japan, and it’s said to have a slightly sweet and tangy flavor that pairs well with the savory pizza crust.

Green peas are a surprisingly popular topping in Brazil. They add a sweet and vegetal flavor that some people find to be a delicious contrast to the savory pizza toppings.

Quail eggs are a bit of a delicacy in Brazil, and they’re often used as a pizza topping. They add a rich and flavorful punch that some people find to be irresistible.

Stroganoff is a Russian dish made with beef, mushrooms, and sour cream. It’s a surprising topping for pizza, but it’s said to be a delicious and creamy alternative to more traditional toppings.

Peanuts are a popular topping in Sweden, and they’re often added to pizza with other sweet and savory ingredients, such as bananas, chicken, pineapple, and curry powder.

Crocodile topping pizza does exist in Australia. It is a relatively rare topping, but it can be found at some specialty pizzerias in the country. Crocodile meat is a lean and flavorful meat that has a slightly sweet and slightly fishy taste. It is often described as tasting similar to chicken or pork.

One of the most famous crocodile pizza toppings is the “Coat of Arms Pizza” from The Australian Heritage Hotel in Sydney. This pizza is topped with kangaroo, emu, and crocodile meat, as well as bush tomato, capsicum peppers, and lemon myrtle mayo.

Finally, Hawaiian pizza is a pizza that originated in Canada in the 1960s. It is typically made with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, pineapple chunks, and ham. The combination of sweet and savory flavors is divisive, with some people loving it and others hating.

Very few people know that the man who made the brave decision to add pineapple to the pizza was a Greek immigrant in Canada.

The man responsible for this gastronomic innovation was none other than Sotirios “Sam” Panopoulos. He arrived in Canada by boat in 1954 with little more than a passion for his departed Greek homeland and a belief that boundless opportunity awaited in his adopted country.

The rest is history.
