The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) has announced that the Flame Lighting Ceremony for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games will take place indoors, at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, this Wednesday, November 26th.

The decision was made due to forecasted adverse weather conditions over the coming days.

The HOC stated the change was necessary to ensure the safety of all participants and to safeguard the dignity and prestige of the Ceremony.

Due to the severely limited capacity of the Museum space, public attendance is no longer possible. Invited guests will be notified individually regarding their right of entry.

The HOC concluded its statement:

“We sincerely regret this change and any inconvenience it may cause. The Hellenic Olympic Committee is making every effort to fully honor the sanctity, tradition, and spirit of the Ceremony, despite the necessary adjustments.”

Olympic flame lighting ceremony in ancient Olympia

The reason that both the Summer and Winter Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremonies begin in Ancient Olympia is purely symbolic and historical, connecting the modern event directly to its ancient Greek roots.

The ceremony is designed to replicate ancient rituals that honored the gods, primarily Zeus and Hestia. The modern use of the parabolic mirror to light the flame symbolizes the purity of the flame, which is ignited by the sun’s rays—a natural source—just as it would have been in antiquity.

The Olympic Games in ancient Greece were not just sporting events; they were a religious festival. Crucially, they were protected by the Olympic Truce (Ekecheiria), which mandated that all conflicts must cease so that athletes and spectators could travel safely to and from Olympia.

The lighting of the flame and the torch relay symbolize the spread of peace and friendship from the sacred site of Olympia to the host city, upholding this ancient spirit of unity.
