A remote area in Greece has been transformed into a biblical village for the filming of Nicolas Cage’s new film, The Carpenter’s Son, which explores the childhood of Jesus Christ.

Megara, Greece, the location of Cage’s Carpenter’s Son

Situated on a mountain near the ancient city of Megara, this location was once a refuge for the town’s inhabitants during times of peril.

It is not the first time that Nicolas Cage has been in Greece for filming, as he has with Penelope Cruz and Christian Bale in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which was filmed on the island of Kefalonia.

Nic Cage, along with FKA Twigs, Noah Jupe, and Souheila Yacoub, have joined the cast of The Carpenter’s Son in what has been described as a horror film by director Lotfy Nathan.

As the son of a carpenter, Jesus would have naturally learned carpentry at his father’s knee. For all practical purposes, then, the gospels of Mark and Matthew are in agreement: Joseph and Jesus practiced the same vocation.

According to Deadline, The Carpenter’s Son tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy,’ is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension. As he exercises his power, the Boy and his family become the target of horrors, both natural and divine.

The screenplay for The Carpenter’s Son was inspired by the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas. Dating back to the 2nd Century AD, the text recounts the childhood of Jesus, Deadline adds.

Cage will be playing the Carpenter, FKA Twigs will be playing the Mother, and the young Noah Jupe (most recently seen in A Quiet Place, Part II) will be playing the role of The Boy.

Second horror movie by Cage in a year

This is the second horror movie Cage has starred in this year following Arcadian, a 2024 post-apocalyptic action horror film directed by Benjamin Brewer from a screenplay by Michael Nilon.

Nicolas Cage plays the father of two teenage boys, all trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The film is an international co-production between the United States, Canada, and Ireland.

Arcadian premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2024, followed by a theatrical release in the United States on April 12, 2024, by RLJE Films. The film received generally favorable reviews from critics.

Cage owns the production company Saturn Films and has produced films such as Shadow of the Vampire (2000) and The Life of David Gale (2003), and has directed Sonny (2002).

For his contributions to the film industry, he was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998. He was ranked No. 40 in Empire magazine’s The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time list in 2007 and was placed No. 37 in Premiere’s 100 Most Powerful People in Hollywood in 2008.
