The picturesque Ionian island of Paxos, which gained worldwide fame as the stunning backdrop for Netflix’s series Maestro in Blue, is reportedly considering a new initiative to manage the surge of visitors it has experienced. Following in the footsteps of other popular Greek destinations, local authorities of Paxos are exploring the possibility of requesting that the government allow them to impose a tourist fee on day-trippers.

The impact of “overtourism” on the small island is significant. During the peak months of July and August, Paxos sees an influx of 240,000 visitors, a staggering ninety times the number of its permanent residents. This massive influx is placing a heavy strain on the island’s infrastructure. The mayor has expressed concerns that essential services, such as garbage collection and the protection of historical monuments, are being stretched to their limits.

Paxos, also known as Paxoi, is a natural choice for a series like Maestro in Blue. Its serene getaways, vibrant summer activities, ancient historical sites, and cozy harbors make it a perfect setting. Beyond its scenic beauty, the island offers a rich cultural experience, hosting fine arts festivals each year amidst its spectacular natural landscapes.

Tourist fees discussed across Greece

The conversation about tourist fees is gaining momentum across Greece, including on Paxos. The nearby Ionian island of Ithaca, the legendary birthplace of Odysseus, is also reportedly considering a similar measure. This follows an earlier request from the mayor of Symi, an Aegean island near the Turkish coast, which has already petitioned the government for permission to levy a fee to help manage the increased infrastructure needs associated with rising visitor numbers.

This growing trend highlights a broader debate in Greece about balancing the economic benefits of tourism with the need to preserve the cultural and environmental integrity of its most beloved islands. As the spotlight from global platforms like Netflix continues to shine on these beautiful destinations, local authorities are seeking sustainable solutions to ensure they remain viable and pristine for both residents and future generations of visitors.
