Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis reshuffled his cabinet on Friday after the disappointing result of the European Parliament election last Sunday.

The governing New Democracy party won, but by losing 6 percent compared with the European elections of 2019 and more than 10 percent compared with the national elections of 2023.

The reshuffle includes changes in the ministries responsible for the rising cost of living, the crisis in the agriculture sector, and immigration.

Takis Theodorikakos replaced Kostas Skrekas at the Development Ministry, who lost the confidence of the PM in combating rising prices.

Two politicians from Thessaly are to lead the Ministry of Agricultural Development. Kostas Tsiaras was named minister and Christos Kellas deputy minister to accommodate the concerns of the farmers following the deadly floods of last September.

Nikos Panagiotopoulos from the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace replaces Dimitris Kairides in the Asylum and Migration Ministry, strengthening the representation of Northern Greece in the cabinet.

Mitsotakis hinted at a cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, saying “corrective measures” were required. “We have three years ahead of us,” he said in an interview with Alpha television broadcast on Tuesday, ruling out a snap national election.

“It is my duty to … move ahead with all those corrective moves which will show people that we have taken their message into account,” he said.
