The search and rescue operation for two missing French women on the Cyclades island of Sikinos and one US man on Amorgos intensified on Sunday, while another US holidaymaker who had gone missing on the Ionian island of Corfu on June 11 was tragically found dead in the water.
French tourists vanish on Sikinos after alerting hotel owner
Local authorities, rescuers and volunteers, reinforced by teams from nearby islands, continued to search for two French women who vanished on the island of Sikinos on Friday after one of them sent a message in distress to the owner of the hotel where she stayed.
The man told Greek network Ant1 TV that the 73-year-old guest had contacted him in the early morning hours of Friday trying to explain her situation in her own language, but failed to send him an accurate geo-pin and her phone has been shut since.
The last information that she shared on the messaging app was a photo in which she appeared lying down.
The other missing French woman, aged 64, stayed at a different hotel on the island, but rescuers believe the two of them were connected and were probably together at the time of their disappearance.
Search efforts are focused on the south of the island, close to the area of the last reception signal on the woman’s phone.
One US tourist found dead on Corfu, one missing on Amorgos
Menawhile, the search for a missing 55-year-old US tourist on the Ionian island of Corfu had a tragic ending, as the man was found dead in the water, close to the shore by the old city harbour.
According to AMNA, it was a female tourist who noticed the body and alerted the police.
Authorities had been searching for the US man on land and sea since June 13, when he was declared missing. The 55-year-old was vacationing on Corfu with a Greek-American friend and was last seen at a cafe in the area of Mathraki on June 11.
Police started a preliminary investigation and a coroner examination was ordered to determine the cause of death.
The search continues for another missing US man on Amorgos island in the Cyclades.
The 59-year-old left hiking on June 11 but never reached his destination where we would be meeting his friend.
Greek network Mega Channel reported that the missing man’s brother as well as his partner would be arriving from Los Angeles to Amorgos this weekend to join the search teams.
