A towering street mural of Maria Callas in Kalamata, Greece, has been named the world’s best for 2025 by the international platform Street Art Cities.
Created by Greek visual artist Kleomenis Kostopoulos (KLE), the large-scale work marks a major milestone for Greek urban art and has quickly become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
Maria Callas mural in Kalamata, Greece gains global recognition
The mural covers the full height of a residential building on Aristomenous Street, transforming an ordinary facade into a striking visual narrative. Combining portrait elements with nature symbolism, the piece blends color, movement, and storytelling on an urban scale. Originally commissioned locally, the project has since gained worldwide visibility through public voting and international exposure.
After the results were announced, Kostopoulos described the distinction as a collective achievement, crediting supporters and voters who helped bring attention to the work. He emphasized that public art reaches its full value when people engage with it, discuss it, and make it part of their daily environment.
Street Art cities puts Greece in the spotlight
Street Art Cities, which organized the global vote, operates as an international registry and discovery network for street art. The platform documents more than 83,000 murals across 1,918 cities, helping audiences locate and explore works while giving artists worldwide exposure.
The Kalamata mural portrays a female figure modeled on Callas, framed by branches, birds, and fruit, visual motifs linked to renewal, balance, and the relationship between people and place. The symbolism resonates strongly with the wider Messinia region, where landscape and cultural identity remain closely connected.

The project was created following an invitation from the Municipality of Kalamata as part of a broader effort to enrich the city center with large-scale contemporary art. Since its completion, the mural has attracted steady interest from both residents and visitors and is widely shared in travel and art circles.
With the award, Kalamata strengthens its presence on the global street art map, while Greece gains fresh recognition for contemporary public art beyond traditional gallery spaces.
