Greece’s next generation of pentathlon athletes delivered a stunning performance at the 2026 European Biathle – Triathle – Laser Run Championships, securing a three-medal haul in the Under-19 (U19) divisions.

The week-long continental tournament, held along the coastal landscape of Machico on Madeira Island from June 22 to June 28, showcased the flagship development sub-sports of the Modern Pentathlon, regulated by the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM).

Tsavalias claims European crown in Pentathlon

The standout performer of the three-member Greek delegation was Michalis Tsavalias, who captured the individual European Title in the U19 Triathle.

Tsavalias dominated the grueling multi-discipline event, which demands continuous transitions between open-water swimming, laser pistol shooting, and distance running.

Greek youth sweeps team podiums

Tsavalias paired up with teammate Petros Kontogiannis to cement Greece’s presence on the podium in the team events:

Triathle Team Event: The duo secured a Silver medal, fending off elite youth pairings from across Europe in the continuous shoot-swim-run format.

Laser Run Team Event: Shifting to the flagship finale discipline of the pentathlon—alternating rounds of rapid laser shooting and pure sprinting—Tsavalias and Kontogiannis dug deep to capture the Bronze medal.

The historic performance marks a major developmental milestone for the Hellenic Modern Pentathlon Federation (EOMOP), confirming the success of its youth growth initiatives as the athletes look toward the upcoming UIPM World Championships in Funchal later this autumn.
