Following the women’s national team’s gold medal triumph on Wednesday, Greek water polo continued its sensational run at the World Aquatics Championships. On Thursday, the National Men’s Polo Team delivered a dominant performance in the bronze medal match, defeating Serbia with an impressive 16-7 victory.

This latest achievement marks a remarkable double medal haul for Greek water polo in Singapore, showcasing the nation’s rising prominence in the sport. For the men’s team, it is their 5th medal in World Championships history, contributing to a total of 17 overall medals for Greece in the event.

Decisive second quarter sets the tone for Greece

The bronze medal match started competitively, with Greece’s Papanikolaou opening the scoring on a power play (1-0). Serbia responded to equalize twice, but Greece consistently edged ahead. The first eight minutes concluded with a tight 2-2 score, the only time Serbia truly matched Greece.

However, the second quarter proved decisive. The Greek team unleashed an offensive crescendo, embarking on an incredible 6-0 scoring run that propelled them to an 8-2 lead by halftime. This powerful surge established a commanding advantage that Serbia would struggle to overcome.

Sustained dominance secures the water polo medal for Greece

The Greek momentum continued into the second half, extending their scoring spree with two more goals to reach 10-2. Despite the comfortable lead, the “blue and white” maintained their frenetic pace. By the end of the third period, Greece had virtually clinched the medal, holding an unassailable +6 lead at 11-5.

The final eight minutes saw Greece maintain control, with no significant shift in momentum. The match concluded with Greece celebrating a resounding 16-7 victory, securing the bronze medal in Singapore.

Quarter Scores: 2-2, 6-0, 3-3, 5-2

The Greek men’s national water polo team stood on the brink of reaching the final on Monday against Spain. It was a mere one-tenth of a second away from beating Spain.  Yet, in a cruel twist of fate, Spain equalized with just 0.1 seconds remaining, forcing a penalty shootout in which Greece ultimately fell, 4-2.

Greek women rule the world in water polo

The Greek women’s water polo team achieved a remarkable victory in the final of the World Cup, winning the gold medal on Wednesday after a stunning performance that swept aside Hungary, the pre-tournament favorite.

The Greek squad proved its mettle by dominating the final from the outset. They led at half-time by 8-4 and continued their high tempo in the second half to seal a historic 12-9 victory.

This was the second time Greece’s women’s water polo team has won gold in the World Cup, following their triumph in 2011. It was also the first time in World Cup history that they beat world power Hungary.
