The 4th Annual Greek International Film Festival Tour of Canada (GIFFT) showcasing the work of talented Greek filmmakers is underway.

Presented by the Hellenic Heritage Foundation, the Mirkopoulos Family, and The Hellenic Initiative Canada, it runs from October 1-31.

This year’s lineup features approximately 22 feature films, 8 documentaries, and 23 short films, presented in 11 cities, including Halifax, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, London, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

Canadians and Greeks in Canada have the opportunity to explore film culture through an expanded program of live events and film showcases. Additionally, all documentaries will be available to screen online for free during the holiday weekend from October 11-13 as part of our ‘Thanksgiving GIFFT Weekend’ campaign.

The festival officially opened with director Eva Nathena’s Murderess (Fonissa), based on the classic novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis, set in late 1800s Greece on the isolated island of Skiathos. The film goes beyond the story of murder, unveiling the lower status of women in a traditional community. Murderess has garnered 9 awards and 17 nominations throughout its festival run.

A special screening of Cyprus in Winter, a documentary by Canadian filmmaker Dannis Koromilas, was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Cyprus division. This film, explores 14 pivotal years in Cyprus’s history—from the birth of the nation to the division in July 1974—and was shown on October 1st, Cyprus’ Independence Day National Holiday.
