A Greek beach has been identified as one of the most expensive to visit in the world. According to TravelMag, the beach of Platis Gialos on the Greek island of Mykonos is one of the most costly in the world.

TravelMag listed Platis Gialos Beach as the 17th most expensive to visit, with the cheapest double room accommodation in a hotel or inn nearby costing an average of $299 per night.

Mykonos is one of the most popular islands frequented by tourists visiting Greece. Famous for its splendid beaches, the island is a favorite spot for those looking for a place to unwind in the sun and water.

Greek beach on Mykonos is one of the most expensive in the world

The TravelMag survey encompassed global destinations that fulfilled specific criteria: they had to boast a minimum of 20 hotels and inns, along with having at least one beach.

The magazine calculated the average price for the most affordable double room available in each destination for the month of August 2023. To ensure quality, only hotels with a minimum three-star rating and situated near the town/city center or beach were taken into account.

At the top of the ranking, Nantucket Town, situated on the island of Nantucket south of Cape Cod, claims the lead with an average nightly rate of $694. Following closely is Positano, located on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, securing the second position with an average rate of $481 per night. Montauk, a charming village on the Long Island peninsula, takes the third spot with an average cost of $478 per night for the least expensive double room.

Notably, the United States dominates the list, housing 11 out of the 20 most expensive beach destinations according to TravelMag’s survey. The remaining nine destinations belong to Europe. The New England region is well-represented with five destinations: Nantucket Town, Kennebunkport, Provincetown, Bar Harbor, and Portland.

Saint-Tropez, the renowned French resort town, secures the fourth spot as the world’s fourth most expensive beach destination, with an average nightly rate of $440. Monaco, a city-state located on the French Riviera, also makes it to the list, ranking ninth in terms of expense. Italy contributes four beach towns to the lineup, namely Positano, Capri, Amalfi, and Santa Margherita Ligure.

Is Mykonos expensive to visit?

The Greek island of Mykonos is immensely popular with tourists but with one of its splendid beaches having been identified amongst the most expensive in the world, this raises the question, is Mykonos prohibitively expensive?

For those wanting to splash some cash, Mykonos is undoubtedly the perfect destination. Celebrities like Matt Damon and the Hemsworth Brothers frequent have been spotted on the island adding to the island’s glamorous reputation.

However, Mykonos is also suitable for those on a budget. In fact, it is possible to enjoy the island on a budget of just 60 euros per day with some thoughtful planning. For example, one should avoid the peak tourist season in August and instead opt to visit in June, July, September, and even October. Cheaper accommodation and dining options are also available.
