The Greek Army General Staff (GES) launched a campaign this week to recruit women aged 20 to 26 for voluntary military service. A promotional video, centered on the message that “responsibility for the homeland concerns everyone,” aims to boost female participation in national defense while highlighting professional growth opportunities.

The video follows a young man and woman arriving at a training center, concluding with the woman entering the facility to begin her service. It showcases the training process, the awarding of ranks, and the rigorous standards required by the General Staff, all underscored by the slogan: “Responsibility for the homeland concerns me as well.”

Eligible women born between 2001 and 2007 can apply online via the official Greek Army website until March 31. To sweeten the deal, the military is offering several incentives, including preferential hiring for public sector roles upon completion of service.

Greek women in the Armed Forces

Greece announced in 2025 that its armed forces will begin the voluntary enlistment of women as part of the country’s “Agenda 2030,” an approach aiming to reform the Greek Armed Forces.

“Women fight daily, demanding equal treatment in every aspect of their lives -socially and professionally. They demand the same within the armed forces of our country,” Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias said at the time.

Currently, a noteworthy number of women serve as officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) in all three armed forces branches – army, navy, air force – as well as in the Hellenic Coast Guard. Women officers and NCOs currently serve on warships and as military aviators.

However, those positions entail graduation from military academies, all of which require admission through the nationwide university entrance system.
