Greece’s museums recorded a 0.8% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers in September 2025, with revenue trends also showing strong gains, according to figures released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (HSA – ELSTAT).

The month also saw a sharp rise in visitors entering free of charge, with free-admission visits up 20.5%, while museum revenue surged by 37.6% compared with September 2024.

The data points to steady demand late in the tourism season, while the jump in earnings suggests stronger ticket performance and higher overall revenue per visitor, highlighting the sector’s growing financial momentum.

Museums: Visitor numbers dip over nine months, revenue climbs

Over the January–September 2025 period, Greece’s museums recorded a 0.7% decline in total attendance compared with the same period in 2024, according to ELSTAT.

Despite the slight drop, free-entry visitors rose 9.3%, while museum revenue climbed 34.8%, highlighting a trend of stronger income even as overall footfall remained largely stable.

Archaeological sites see fewer visitors in September, sharper revenue growth

In September 2025, Greece’s archaeological sites experienced a 6.3% drop in total visitors compared with September 2024, yet revenue saw a significant increase.

Free-admission visits rose 14.4%, while site revenue jumped 45.8%, demonstrating that income growth persisted despite fewer overall visitors.

Nine-month results show sustained revenue growth for Greece’s museums

Across the first nine months of 2025, Greece’s archaeological sites also recorded lower overall attendance, with visitor numbers down 4.8% year-on-year. Even so, free-entry visits increased 5.9%, while revenue rose 40.8%, underscoring the strong financial momentum behind Greece’s cultural and heritage attractions in 2025.

ELSTAT figures thus suggest that Greece’s museums and archaeological sites delivered strong revenue growth in 2025, supported by rising receipts and expanding free-access participation, even as overall attendance trends remained uneven.
