The Region of Attica has earned two prestigious nominations at the 2025 World Travel Awards (WTA)—widely known as the Oscars of World Tourism. Greece’s largest and most populous region is shortlisted in the categories of “World’s Leading Regional Cultural Destination” and “World’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination.”

These nominations underscore Attica’s growing recognition as one of the world’s most dynamic and multifaceted destinations—one that seamlessly blends culture, coastline, gastronomy, nature, and year-round experiences.

A cohesive strategy for global visibility

The international recognition reflects the outward-looking tourism strategy who has prioritized strategic partnerships, a strong international presence at major travel fairs and media platforms, and a unified destination brand: “The Greater Athens Region.”

This new identity positions Attica as a metropolitan region of contrasts and connections, combining ancient heritage with modern vibrancy—from the Acropolis and city life of Athens to the Saronic coastline and surrounding nature escapes.

Ongoing infrastructure projects also play a central role in this transformation. One of the most significant is the upcoming Metropolitan Park “Aenon” in Faliro Bay, a landmark redevelopment spanning 741 acres. The park aims to highlight Attica’s maritime identity, creating an expansive green and leisure hub for residents and visitors alike.

Strong competition in the global arena

Competition at the World Travel Awards is expected to be particularly fierce. Attica will face strong contenders such as Andalusia, Catalonia, Lisbon, and the Canary Islands, as well as leading destinations from Asia and Central America—all of which are investing heavily in global branding and cultural tourism.

Nevertheless, Attica’s dual nomination reflects the region’s evolving tourism identity and its effort to combine its urban, cultural, and coastal strengths under one coherent vision.
