Greece is being hit by a strong winter system, bringing widespread snowfall, a sharp drop in temperatures, and increasing disruption to travel. Emergency services and local authorities in affected areas remain on high alert, with snow-clearing operations underway and additional precautionary measures being activated as conditions worsen.
According to meteo, heavy snow has been falling since early Wednesday morning on January 21 across large parts of the country from mountain regions to areas closer to major cities. The weather front is impacting northern, central, and southern Greece, including parts of Attica, underscoring the scale and intensity of the storm.
Snowfall spreads across multiple regions of Greece
The weather front is bringing heavy snowfall to multiple parts of the country, including:
- Macedonia: Grevena, Giannitsa, Vasilitsa
- Epirus: Metsovo, Vovousa (Ioannina region)
- Thessaly: Pezoula (Karditsa), Vamvakou (Farsala), Kalampaka
- Central Greece: Mavrolithari (Fokida), Ypati (Fthiotida), Amfikleia, Palaiochori (Fthiotida)
- Peloponnese: Mesorrougi (Achaia)
- Attica: Mount Parnitha, Mount Penteli
From high-altitude villages to well-known mountain destinations, snow is building up quickly, increasing concerns over road safety and access in affected areas.
Thessaloniki experiences first snow as temperatures drop
Thessaloniki recorded its first snowfall of the season in the early morning hours, with Hortiatis and the city’s higher elevations quickly turning white.
A thin layer of snow spread across nearby hills, prompting local agencies to shift into a state of preparedness. So far, travel has not been significantly disrupted in these areas, although response crews remain on standby in case conditions worsen.

However, while Thessaloniki’s mountains are seeing snow, the city center is receiving rain. Early temperatures were around 4°C (39°F) downtown, while Lagkadas dropped to 0°C (32°F), highlighting the sharp contrast over a short distance.
Pella villages, Trikala record snowfall
Snowfall has also intensified across multiple villages in the Pella region. In Samarina (Grevena), authorities reported blizzard-like conditions, highlighting the severity of the storm in mountainous areas.
Due to hazardous weather and in the interest of student and staff safety, schools in several affected locations, including in Attica, have been ordered to remain closed, as officials work to reduce unnecessary travel and limit risks on the roads.
Snow has also moved into urban areas, with dense snowfall reported within Trikala since the early morning hours. The intensity of the weather has reduced visibility and increased the risk of icy streets, contributing to slower traffic conditions.
Over a foot of snow in mountain villages near Lamia
Snowfall has continued in the mountainous areas around Lamia since the morning hours, with accumulation reaching significant levels in several communities.
Reports indicate snow depth has exceeded a foot (30 centimeters) of precipitation in villages such as Pavliani, Koumaritsi, and Eleftherochori. In Kalamaki, accumulation amounts to approximately 8 inches (20 cm). These totals are already resulting in challenges for traffic, particularly along local road networks, where conditions can deteriorate quickly as snowfall continues.
Video footage shows snowfall in multiple areas of Greece
As the weather front continues, footage shared by Forecast Weather captured ongoing snowfall in numerous locations including in: Naousa (Imathia), Karditsa, Karpenisi, and Trikala (Corinth).
With the weather system still unfolding, authorities are monitoring developments closely, and residents are urged to remain cautious, particularly those traveling through mountain routes or areas experiencing rapid accumulation.
