The European Parliament has announced its first-ever class of recipients for the European Order of Merit, with Giannis Antetokounmpo among the distinguished honorees.
The new distinction, unveiled on Tuesday by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, serves as a high-level political recognition for individuals who have significantly contributed to European integration or who have played a vital role in promoting and defending European values.
A recognition of impact
In her address announcing the honorees, President Metsola emphasized that the Order is designed to recognize those who have actively shaped the continent. “Europe has always been built by its people—those who bridge divides, break down walls, overcome dictatorships, and navigate crises to forge a better future,” Metsola stated. “With the European Order of Merit, we honor those who did not simply believe in Europe, but who actively helped build it.”
Antetokounmpo was designated as a Member of the European Order of Merit, joining a select group of honorees that includes world leaders, humanitarian figures, and cultural icons, such as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and the band U2.
Prestigious company for Antetokounmpo
The Order is a rare and exclusive distinction, with a mandate to appoint no more than 20 recipients per year. By receiving this honor, Antetokounmpo stands alongside figures from diverse fields—including diplomacy, academia, healthcare, and humanitarian aid—who have been recognized for their measurable impact on European life and ideals.
Nominations for the Order were sourced from a high-level pool of heads of state, government officials, and leaders of EU institutions, underscoring the prestige associated with the recognition.
The inaugural class of the European Order of Merit has been invited to an official award ceremony in Strasbourg. The event will take place during the plenary session scheduled for May 18–21, 2026.
