Epirus’s Rivers and Lakes Offer a Refreshing Oasis Amidst Greece’s Heatwave

As Greece grapples with yet another intense heatwave, the region of Epirus, with its rivers and lakes, presents a refreshing oasis.

With temperatures soaring to a scorching 44°C in some regions, the traditional allure of its sun-drenched islands and dazzling turquoise seas might feel less like an escape and more like an oven. While coastal zones offer some respite, mainland areas, including Athens (forecast 41-42°C), are facing stifling conditions, prompting warnings from health authorities and the closure of major tourist sites like the Acropolis during peak hours.

But for those seeking a truly refreshing alternative, far from the sweltering concrete and crowded beaches, Greece’s majestic mountainous heart offers an unexpected paradise: the cool, crystalline waters of Epirus’s rivers and lakes. This less-explored facet of Greek summer provides a unique and invigorating “coolcation” experience, inviting travelers to redefine their notion of a perfect Greek holiday.

The mountainous beauty of Epirus presents a stark contrast to the familiar island landscape. Here, the “beaches” are found amidst rocky outcrops and under the shade of ancient trees, offering a challenging yet deeply rewarding escape from the oppressive heat.

For the adventurous, the legendary Drakolimni (Dragon Lake) of Tymfi promises an exhilarating experience. Swimming at an altitude of 2,000 meters, amidst the towering peaks of Astraka, Ploskos, and Gamila, is truly unforgettable.

While the approximately four-hour hike from Little Papigo to reach it demands willpower and physical fitness, the reward of dipping into its cool waters, alongside the mythical “drakakia” (alpine newts), makes the effort worthwhile.

For those less inclined to rigorous trekking, the Kolimbithres (swimming holes) near Papigo offer a more accessible haven. Located almost beside the road connecting Little and Big Papigo, these naturally formed “pools” in the Rogovo stream are fed by waterfalls, creating smooth stone steps and inviting, clear waters – a perfect, natural antidote to the summer heat.

Further into the Zagoria area, at an altitude of 900 meters in the village of Heliochori, lies another hidden gem: the waterfalls of Bada Di Striga. Amidst a lush forest of oaks and pines, these three waterfalls cascade into natural swimming pools, providing an irresistible breath of freshness.

The Aoos River in the plain of Konitsa, near its iconic stone bridge, offers wide sandy shores and crystal-clear waters, perfect for a swim or even canoeing and kayaking.

Similarly, the ancient Acheron River in Preveza, with its sources near Glyki village, is a popular meeting point for locals and tourists alike. Known as one of Europe’s clearest rivers, its smooth-flowing sections form small lakes and ponds ideal for swimming amidst abundant wildlife.

Although not in Epirus, Grevena, nearby, offers a natural hot bath experience where the Venetikos River at the exit of the Portitsa gorge creates a unique thermal pool. Here, the green waters of Venetikos carve their way through rocks, forming a natural hot tub in an idyllic, lush setting.

This summer, as urban centers and popular coastal destinations swelter, the tranquil and naturally air-conditioned landscapes of Epirus offer a compelling invitation.

It’s an opportunity to embrace a different kind of Greek holiday – one defined by cool mountain breezes, invigorating swims in pristine natural waters, and the discovery of a hidden side of Greece’s breathtaking beauty. Be creative, explore these mountainous regions, and find your ideal cool escape amidst the peaks, rivers, and lakes of Epirus.
