Astypalea is what we call a real hidden gem in the Aegean Sea. It’s not among the most popular or recognizable names when it comes to Greek destinations, but it offers visitors paramount Greek beauty along with a wonderful range of restaurants, cafes, tavernas, bars, and even nightclubs that would make everyone happy. What’s even better? The fact that it accommodates all these amenities despite its relatively small size.

One of the most memorable experiences for those lucky enough to visit the island comes a few months before the summer season begins: It’s during Greek Orthodox Easter, when the locals and the handful of visitors become one big family, celebrating this momentous religious event whilst indulging in the fabulous local Greek cuisine.

Getting to the Greek Island of Astypalea

There are a couple of ways to reach the secluded paradise called Astypalea. The island has a small airport with mainly domestic flights from Athens that only take about 50 minutes – this method is super quick and easy for those who land in Athens and use the Greek capital as an island-hopping center.

However, if you’re up for a more scenic and traditional Aegean journey, you can hop on a ferry from Piraeus, the port city of metropolitan Athens. Obviously, the trip is quite long as it takes on average around nine hours, but it’s definitely worth it. With this option, visitors will get to soak in the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and even stop at other enchanting Greek islands like Naxos, Amorgos, Paros, and even Rhodes – depending on where you catch your ferry from – along the way. It’s like a mini island-hopping adventure before you even arrive, making this choice quite compelling for those with time to spend!

Where to Stay on Astypalea

Once you make it to Astypalea, you will need a place to stay for the next few days. The locals of this beautiful island, despite its small size, have got you covered with a wide range of stunning accommodation options to suit every taste and budget.

If you want to be in the heart of the action, you will need to head to the main town, Chora. Picture traditionally Greek and charming whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways that become a maze, and jaw-dropping views of the Aegean Sea.

Here, you’ll find plenty of small and bigger hotels, apartments, and studios to let, and even some luxurious villas if you’re feeling fancy and want to indulge in something more impressive during your alternative Greek vacation.

However, suppose you’re craving a more traditional, tranquil, and secluded stay that reminds you of the local life. In that case, you’d be better off going to the gorgeous beaches of the island, like Livadi or Analipsi. These areas have some amazing beachfront hotels and rooms with views that’ll make your heart skip a beat.

Αs for all those who seek a more adventurous experience, camping is indeed a popular choice on Astypalea. The island’s bohemian camping scene draws in loads of people, particularly young Greek tourists looking for a unique experience as close to mother nature as possible.

The owners of the restaurants there are always attentive and will guide you through each course, ensuring you get an unforgettable dining experience at the heart of the largest settlement on the island.
