Cyprus has thrust the NATO question back into the spotlight after President Nikos Christodoulides said the country would be ready to apply for membership immediately if political conditions allowed, linking the issue to mounting instability in the Middle East.

Christodoulides said the Republic of Cyprus would submit an application to join the Alliance “even tomorrow” if circumstances made such a move possible. He made the remarks as security concerns intensified across the Eastern Mediterranean following the latest developments in the Middle East.

At the same time, the Cypriot president made clear that such a step is not currently possible. He said the political conditions do not allow it at present, pointing in particular to Turkey’s well known position.

Cyprus Lays Groundwork for a Future NATO Bid

Although no formal application is imminent, Christodoulides said Cyprus is already doing the groundwork needed to move quickly if the political environment changes.

According to his remarks, that effort is taking place at the military, operational, and administrative levels. The message from Nicosia is that while the political path remains blocked for now, the state wants to be fully prepared if an opening emerges.

That position suggests Cyprus is treating NATO membership not simply as a distant idea, but as a possible future strategic choice shaped by regional developments.

Schinas Pushes Cyprus NATO Debate Back Into Focus Amid Middle East Tensions

The issue gained fresh visibility after former European Commission Vice President Margaritis Schinas argued that Cyprus should seriously consider applying to join NATO.

Speaking at a conference in Limassol, Schinas said NATO membership should be examined as the next step in strengthening the island’s long term stability and reinforcing security in Southeastern Europe. He also argued that the current moment may be especially favorable, saying there may not be a better opportunity for Cyprus to move in that direction.

Schinas framed the issue in geopolitical terms, arguing that Cyprus occupies a uniquely exposed position on the front line of regional instability while remaining outside the Alliance. That reality stands out even more because both Greece and Turkey are already NATO members.

Diplomatic Misstep Fuels Public Debate

The debate drew further attention after British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy incorrectly said in a public statement that Cyprus is a NATO member.

The remark prompted criticism and renewed scrutiny of the island’s actual status. The Republic of Cyprus is not part of NATO and does not participate in the Partnership for Peace program, unlike several other European countries that remain outside the Alliance while maintaining formal cooperation with it.

The episode also underlined how often Cyprus is discussed within the broader framework of Western security, even though its formal relationship with NATO remains limited.

How Middle East Tensions Are Shaping the Cyprus NATO Debate

The renewed discussion reflects broader disagreements over Cyprus’ strategic direction at a time of continued geopolitical uncertainty.

Supporters argue that eventual NATO membership could strengthen the country’s security position in an increasingly unstable region. More cautious voices, however, stress that the issue cannot be separated from Cyprus’ relationship with Turkey or from the broader trajectory of the Cyprus problem.

For now, membership remains politically out of reach. Still, the latest comments from Christodoulides and Schinas show that the issue has returned to the center of a wider conversation about Cyprus’ place in a changing regional security landscape.
