The highly anticipated concert by Coldplay in Athens in the summer of 2024 is now in doubt after the closure of the Olympic Stadium for urgent repairs.
The concert announced recently with great fanfare would have been the first performance of the immensely popular rock band in Greece.
It would have been part of the globally acclaimed Music Of The Spheres World Tour, which has already shattered all previous sales records, solidifying its position as one of the most influential acts in the music industry.
However, the closure of the Olympic Stadium in Athens for an unspecified period that could take months has disappointed the Greek fans of the group.
Coldplay concert in Athens depends on the duration of repairs
Production company Hight Priority Promotions issued a statement on Monday asking for “patience and understanding.”
The company says that it was informed by the media on the closure of the Olympic Stadium (OAKA).
“We are waiting for official information from the lessor company if the contract between us will be executed normally, which depends on the duration of the works that will have to be implemented to make the stadium safe.
“We ask for your patience and understanding, as we all wish the same thing…to see the top band of its time in the most spectacular concert ever held in Greece!”
Ticket sales for the concert in Greece and the whole tour began in July. Since the Music Of The Spheres World Tour kicked off in March 2022, Coldplay has achieved remarkable success, selling over 7.5 million tickets. This outstanding feat makes it the highest-grossing tour in the last two years, captivating audiences.
Rust was found along the iconic arched roof of OAKA last week forcing authorities to close the stadium which hosted the 2004 Olympic Games.
The 70,000-seat Olympic Stadium, Greece’s largest, and nearby Olympic Velodrome are covered by white-ribbed steel roofs designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
The two Greek sports facilities were shuttered late Friday after failing a safety inspection launched in April and overseen by a public asset agency. The velodrome was evacuated while hosting a national bridge tournament, attended by several hundred people.
It was the latest headache for Greek authorities in managing costly Olympic venues around the capital, many remaining underused or mothballed.
“It is a known fact that the (Olympic Stadium) had not been maintained for two decades. Who does not feel disappointed when they see the pictures of such important facilities that have been left to their fate for so many years?” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote in an online post.
The Olympic Stadium closure will force Greek soccer club Panathinaikos to seek another venue for its upcoming Europa League games against French team Rennes and Israeli club Maccabi Haifa.
