The long-awaited Blood of Zeus Season 2 created by the Greek-American Parlapanides brothers premieres on Netflix on May 9, 2024.
The first season of Blood of Zeus captured the imaginations of viewers with its gripping tale of gods and demons. Created by Charley Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides, whose mother was born and raised in Greece, and their father, like a lot of Greek Americans, owned a diner.
The animated series debuted with a compelling first season in October 2020, featuring eight episodes that left fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter of the story.
Netflix’s Blood of Zeus and the world of the Greek Gods
The first season introduced us to a world where the gods’ realm is in turmoil following the demise of Zeus. This catastrophic event creates a power struggle among the deities, leaving Zeus’ demigod son, Heron, at the center of a brewing storm.
Heron grapples with grief and uncertainty as he tries to find his place in a world torn apart by divine machinations.
Haunted by mysterious dreams and a compelling refrain, Heron’s journey takes a pivotal turn when he learns of his brother Seraphim’s plight.
Seraphim, trapped in the depths of the Underworld, faces unimaginable horrors as forces both mortal and divine seek to manipulate him for their own ends.
Amidst this chaos, Hades, the ruler of the Underworld, sees an opportunity to seize power and end his family’s eternal suffering. His plan involves enlisting Seraphim to help him secure Zeus’ vacant throne, setting the stage for a clash of titanic proportions that will determine the fate of gods and mortals alike.
Speaking to Greek Reporter after the release of the first series the Parlapanides brothers said the decision to create an original storyline was done out of necessity.
“We’ve pitched the traditional Greek mythological tales, and even when executives or producers say they loved it, their eyes kind of glaze over once you start telling them these stories,” Charley explained.
The producers also wanted to explore different themes in “Blood of Zeus,” with one of those concepts being anger, through the lens of the series’ protagonist Heron. “He has every right to be angry,” Vlas explained while discussing the character, “but there’s the danger of allowing that to fester. If he’s not careful, it can end up destroying him. If he can let it go, which he ends up doing, he becomes the best version of himself.”
What makes “Blood of Zeus” stand out among its modern contemporaries is how it forgoes the anti-hero archetype in favor of a traditional protagonist. “We love the Joseph Campbell stories where you see the hero rise up,” Charley said.
