Athina Onassis, the only surviving descendant of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, was spotted in Mykonos where she arrived on a private jet from the Netherlands on Monday.

According to reports, she arrived with a group of friends and she wore a scarf on her head, trying to avoid prying eyes. After she arrived at the island’s airport, she was picked up by a car that took her to an unknown destination on the island.

It is a rare visit of Onassis to Greece who has cut her ties with the country. Her last known visit to Greece was 16 years ago when she was accompanied by her then-husband, Alvaro de Miranda Neto.

Petros Nazos of local site mykonoslive.tv confirmed that she was seen walking the main street of the Greek island accompanied by bodyguards. She was wearing dark glasses and a scarf.

Reports say Athina Onassis stays on a yacht in Mykonos

He also revealed that Onassis had visited Mykonos in 2018 and that none had spotted her at the time. A sole photo of the Greek heiress dining in a restaurant was the only document proving she visited the island.

Nazos said that Onassis avoids publicity. She stays in a secret location and shuns the upmarket restaurants and bars that celebrities frequent.

Some reports say she and her friends are staying in a luxury yacht anchored off Mykonos.

The tragic story of Athina Onassis

The 38-year-old lone heiress to the Onassis fortune has generally been known to keep a low profile. Although she does appear publicly for equestrian events, she has never garnered a reputation for the ostentatious displays of wealth often associated with figures of similar riches and status.

Despite her riches, she seems to have been singled out for a life of tragedy and difficulties. Her mother, Christina Onassis, was found dead on November 19, 1988 in the bathtub of a friend’s house in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Athina was only three years of age when her mother Christina passed away of a pulmonary edema. Since the death of Christina Onassis, she is the sole surviving member of the Onassis family.

Beyond her family associations, she is best known for her career as an equestrian. As a professional showjumper, she has represented Greece in the 2013 European Show Jumping Championships and the 2014 World Championships.

Through show jumping, Athina met her former husband, Alvaro de Miranda Neto, also known as Doda, a Brazilian showjumper. The couple married in 2005 when Athina was only 20 years old.

They continued to travel the world, competing in the glittering world of show jumping for eleven years until Athina’s world was rocked after revelations of her husband’s serial infidelity.

Revelations of the infidelity ultimately led to a very difficult divorce, that took years to resolve.
