Two West Virginia National Guard soldiers were critically wounded in a “targeted shooting” less than two blocks from the White House.
The lone suspect, quickly subdued by nearby National Guard personnel, was identified as Rahmanullah Lakamal, an Afghan national.
Lakamal entered the U.S. in September 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a program that evacuated and resettled approximately 76,000 Afghans following the U.S. withdrawal.
President Donald Trump condemned the attack as an “act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror,” vowing the suspect would face the “steepest possible price.”
Citing the need to “re-examine every single alien” from Afghanistan who entered during the previous administration, President Trump announced he would take steps to remove foreigners who “do not belong here.”
“We must now re-examine every alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden,” said Trump in a live address on Wednesday night.
In response, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) immediately suspended the processing of all Afghan immigration requests pending a complete review of security and vetting protocols.
In a post on X, the agency said: “The protection and safety of our homeland and of the American people remains our singular focus and mission.”
