Emotional scenes unfolded this Monday during the Men’s Slalom at the Winter Olympics in Italy as Greek skier AJ Ginnis took to the slopes for the final run of his career. Having announced his retirement prior to the Games due to recurring injuries, Ginnis competed one last time in the discipline that defined his historic career.

As he crossed the finish line, the crowd erupted in a standing ovation. Ginnis responded with a final, poignant bow to the spectators, marking the end of an era for Greek winter sports.

Despite his legendary status as the first Greek athlete to win a major winter sports medal—silver at the World Alpine Ski Championships—Ginnis struggled to return to peak form following his most recent ACL injury. Nevertheless, his presence in Italy was a testament to his resilience.

About AJ Ginnis

Born Alexandros Ioannis Ginnis on November 17, 1994, he grew up in Vouliagmeni before moving to the US at age 16. A specialist in technical events, specifically the Slalom, he initially competed for the United States before switching to represent Greece in 2020. In February 2023, he made history by securing Greece’s first-ever podium in a World Cup event, followed shortly by his historic World Championship silver medal.

In an official statement, the HOC noted: “The Hellenic Olympic Committee wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to our premier skier, AJ Ginnis. His love for his country and his self-sacrifice in competing for Team Hellas at Milano Cortina 2026, despite his injuries, serve as a shining example of his greatness of soul. AJ, thank you for everything. You will forever be a member of Team Hellas.”
