What started as an attempt to follow a popular social media challenge has left a Greek man in intensive care where he remains in critical condition. The man took part in a viral social media challenge, which required participants to swallow a burger without chewing. Moments later, the challenge ended in disaster.
Witnesses say the man suddenly collapsed after attempting the stunt, with his airway completely blocked. Friends nearby tried to help but were unable to provide effective first aid. When emergency services arrived, he was unresponsive and required immediate medical attention.

The man was transferred to a Hospital in Athens, where he remains intubated in the intensive care unit. Doctors have reported extensive damage to his brain, kidneys, and other organs, caused by oxygen deprivation following the incident.
Dr. Matina Pagoni, a medical specialist, explained that the victim’s condition resulted from a total airway obstruction. She added that no one present knew how to administer the Heimlich maneuver, a vital first-aid procedure that might have prevented the tragedy.
“Every second counts when someone is choking,” she said, stressing the importance of first-aid knowledge in public spaces.
Rising risks of viral challenges
The case has renewed concern over the spread of life-threatening online challenges, which often encourage participants to perform reckless acts for social media views. Such trends, frequently targeting young people, can escalate quickly from entertainment to tragedy.
Health experts are urging greater awareness and education about the dangers of viral stunts and the importance of emergency response training.
They warn that as online platforms continue to amplify risky behavior, tragedies like this become increasingly common — unless action is taken to promote safety over viral fame.
