A professor from the University of California, Berkeley was shot and killed while visiting family in Athens, Greece. Przemysław Jeziorski, 43, an associate professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, was fatally shot in broad daylight in Agia Paraskevi, a suburb of Athens.

Authorities said a masked gunman approached him and fired five shots at close range. He was struck in the chest and neck. According to reports, Jeziorski had been on his way to pick up his children from his ex-wife, who lives nearby. The professor had traveled to Greece to attend a custody hearing regarding his children.

The killing has drawn international attention, though the motive remains unclear. Police in Athens are continuing their investigation. The suspect has not yet been identified or apprehended.

University mourns loss of respected faculty member

Haas School of Business dean Jennifer Chatman expressed sorrow over Jeziorski’s death in a statement to The Daily Californian, the university’s student newspaper.

“I am heartbroken by the tragic and sudden death of Professor Przemyslaw Jeziorski, a beloved member of our marketing faculty and Haas community,” Chatman said.

“While authorities are investigating what happened, our immediate focus is on supporting our community during this difficult period. My heart goes out to Przemek’s family and loved ones. We will miss him.”

Colleagues praise his academic legacy

Jeziorski had been a faculty member at UC Berkeley since 2012. His colleagues described him as a brilliant scholar with a sharp intellect and a deep commitment to his field.

“Przemek was an outstanding scholar,” said Zsolt Katona, a fellow professor at Haas. “His research at the intersection of marketing and economics led the way in important areas from mergers and acquisitions to search advertising and mobile money.”

According to his university biography, Jeziorski had more than 15 years of teaching and research experience, with previous teaching positions at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Arizona. The university described him as a leading expert in marketing and economics.

Family seeks justice and support

His family is now working to bring his body back to Poland for burial. Łukasz Jeziorski, who identified himself as the professor’s brother, said in a message posted to a European crowdfunding page that Jeziorski was “the victim of a terrible crime, and the perpetrator is still at large.”

“Our family is heartbroken, and we are doing everything we can to ensure that justice is served,” he wrote. He added that the funds would help cover legal fees, repatriation costs, and other related expenses. “Przemek was a loving father to two young children and a beloved professor at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.”

According to Greek newspaper Ta Nea, the Greek Police, who have taken a statement from the victim’s ex-wife and mother of his children, are now closely examining the 43-year-old’s background in an effort to determine who may have wanted him dead — and why — in what appears to be a targeted execution.
