Aegean Regatta Sets Sail From Greek Islands on Monday

Boats taking part in the 19th annual “Aegean Regatta” sailing competition set sail in the Aegean Sea from the Greek port of Mytilene on Monday, AMNA reports.

A total of sixty vessels and their crews, including twelve crews from Turkey, Russia, and Bulgaria, began their journey from Mytilene to Plomari, on the island of Lesvos, today, and will continue on to the island of Psara.

The regatta will continue on to its finish at the islands of Oinousses on August 24.

The Aegean Regatta, a series of spectacular offshore sailing races taking place during the third week of August on the Aegean Sea, is one of the most important sporting events in the country. It welcomes sailing teams from both Greece and abroad who compete against each other on the azure seas off the Greek islands.

The origins of the race go back to 2001, when the Regatta was first held. Its goal, then as now, was to introduce some lesser-known Greek islands to sailing enthusiasts and help strengthen their local economies.

This principle is still holds fast until this day, as each year’s race takes place off different,  relatively lesser-known Greek islands.

The Aegean Regatta 2019 racing program is as follows:

• Monday 19/08 – Offshore race from Mytilene to Plomari, on Lesvos

• Tuesday 20/08 – Free Day

• Wednesday 21/08 – Offshore race from Plomari to Psara

• Thursday 22/08 – Free Day

• Friday 23/08 – Offshore race from Psara to Oinousses

• Saturday 24/08 – Inshore races, based around Oinousses

The Aegean Regatta 2019 is organized by the General Secretariat for Aegean and Island Policy, in collaboration with the Hellenic Sailing Federation/Hellenic Offshore Committee.
